Hans Steinbichler, born in Solothurn/Switzerland, began writing and got into photography early. He studied law in Passau before enrolling at Munich Film School HFF in 1995. His graduating film HIERANKL won him numerous prizes including Grimme Prize in Gold. His follow up WINTER JOURNEY was the Opening Film oft he Munich Filmfest 2006 and won again numerous awards and German Film Awards. After shooting AUSTISTIC DISCO and MY MOTHER, MY BRIDE AND I that was screened in Toronto and also received the Grimme-Award, Steinbichler shot PROMISING THE MOON, that won the Bavarian Film Award in 2011.

From 2013 to 2015, Hans Steinbichler was Professor of Directing at the Cologne International Film School. In March 2016, Hans Steinbichler's movie THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK had its world premiere at the Berlinale and was then released on 3rd of March 2016 in the cinemas. In November 2016, Steinbichler received the German Director Award Metropolis for this work, and the lead actress Lea van Acken the Bavarian Film Prize. Steinbichler was once again nominated for the German Director's Award Metropolis in 2017 for an AN UNHEARD WOMAN. The film also won the German Television Prize 2018 and the Grimme Prize 2018 for Best Fiction. In autumn 2018, Steinbichler filmed the Rita Falk novel HANNES for Studiocanal. The film will be released in cinemas nationwide in 2020.

Since 2010, Hans Steinbichler has been shooting the spots for ERDINGER WEISSBRÄU and ERDINGER ALKOHOHLFREI. His portfolio includes clients such as EHRMANN, BIOREPAIR and GELTEX, as well as clients such as the BAVARIAN MINISTRY OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS, who are interested in Steinbichler's concept of “heimat” for the public image of Bavaria.
